The Volkswagen Tiguan and the Kia Sportage are two stylish SUVs. They're also capable in tough driving conditions and offer lots of cargo room. Which one is right for you, though? To help drivers in Ithaca, Elmira, and Cortland, NY, decide, the team at Maguire Volkswagen looks at what they can do for you in this 2020 VW Tiguan vs. Kia Sportage comparison.

SUV Specs

The 2020 VW Tiguan offers a sporty and powerful performance. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but 4MOTION® all-wheel drive with Active Control is also available. The all-wheel drive system includes selectable driving modes, like Snow and Off-Road, that let you adapt to your current driving conditions.

Under the hood, you'll find a turbocharged 2.0L TSI® 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 184 horsepower and 221 lb-t of torque. To manage this powertrain, it comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission that includes both Tiptronic® and Sport modes.

The Kia Optima is also available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. It also offers selectable driving modes, but they're not geared toward tough driving conditions. It can't provide you with as much power or torque when you need it, either. It runs on a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Its 6-speed automatic transmission isn't as capable, either.

Seating & Storage

The VW Tiguan is designed to accommodate large families and lots of cargo. It's available with two or three rows of seats. The pair of third-row seats gives it space for up to seven people. On top of offering room for the whole family, it can also carry everything from a few bags to a couple pieces of furniture.

The 5-seater features 37.6 cubic feet of trunk space. With the back seats folded down, it offers up to 73.5 cubic feet of cargo room. The 7-seater also comes with folding seats and lets you make up to 65.7 cubic feet of cargo room.

The Kia Optima doesn't offer enough seating for big families. It's only available with two rows of seats. Unfortunately, it doesn't give you as much cargo room, either. The trunk has just 30.7 cubic feet of cargo room, while folding the seats down only gives you up to 60.1 cubic feet of cargo room.

Infotainment System

Both SUVS come with a touchscreen display and lots of smartphone compatibility. You'll be able to safely make hands-free calls with Bluetooth®, stream music, and sync your phone's apps with standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto®.

However, the VW Tiguan offers more technology when you're behind the wheel. The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit turns the instrument cluster into a high-definition display. It's fully customizable and capable of saving up to four driver profiles. On top of seeing all the information you want to see, you can switch over to full-screen navigation mode and view your route anytime.

The Kia Optima doesn't offer anything like the VW Digital Cockpit. Its instrument cluster only includes a simple trim computer and a small screen in between the gauges.
